🐚 Polished Ammonite Half – Likely Madagascar

A stunning polished ammonite half, most likely from Madagascar, dating back approximately 110–120 million years to the Early Cretaceous. The chambers are beautifully preserved and naturally infilled with sparkling calcite, creating a striking contrast against the fossil shell.

How was it formed?
Ammonites were marine animals related to modern squid, octopus and nautilus. As they grew, they built larger chambers in their spiral shell, sealing off the older ones behind them. After the animal died, the shell settled onto the seabed and became buried by sediment. Over millions of years, minerals such as calcite seeped into the empty chambers while the shell fossilised, preserving the intricate spiral that has survived for over 100 million years.
